Sagg Main to The Point: Prone Paddle

The Route: West to East

Solo paddler, Peter Schaefer just completed a self supported prone paddle mission from Sagg Main Beach to Montauk Point. This hallowed stretch of Long Island coast line has long been the proving ground for many, including the late and great Mike Semkus, who set out on a run one Day from Sagg Main and didn’t stop until he hit the point. Now, over a decade later, the next generation continues that legacy. This time, entirely in the water.

Date of Completion: 09/19/2025

Trip Report: “The morning conditions could not have been better. The water was glassy until around 10:30 am when the wind started blowing out of the north west which could’ve been worse. I was paddling west to east so it was behind me when it switched completely west around 1pm. I decided to take a break on the beach 17 miles in to hydrate and eat. The last 9 miles were insanely mental. It took everything I had to keep pushing especially when I made the turn northeast around ditch plains. There I had to start fighting the east current. Once I had the lighthouse in my line of sight I turned on the jets and gave it everything I had. I’ve never been happier to get out of the water.” - Peter Schaefer
