Why DPB: I live DPB’s fundamental goal. Athletics –– particularly endurance sports ––helped save my mental health and actually turned around my life.
Favorite challenge: I’ve cherished every DPB event – from the one-hour Tuesday morning summer mile swims to the several mile swim from Gardiners Island to Plum Island, because they evoke feelings of belonging to a community. The Montauk Point to Block Island swim was a long time goal, achievable only through community.
Most difficult challenge: The most difficult swim was from Gardiner’s Island to Plum Island. The waters were filled with huge stinging red jellies. They were invisible, until they stung. Every stroke I’d think, “will this be one now?”
Next objective: I train through the winter with summer in mind. It’s all about being in the moment for a future goal.
